after my farm-job in dargaville i went to whangarei and i drove to my new couchsurfing host alex. he is a 74 year old man who lives in a caravan a bit outside of the city. he has a garage with a tent and two mattresses inside. that’s all you need for couchsurfing. i arrived there in the afternoon and he asked me if i want to see a kiwi-bird by daylight..
i was confused because you can only see kiwi birds at nighttime and they are so rare. there is one small island in the bottom of new zealand which is called steward island. that’s pretty much the only place which is known for seeing kiwi birds at night.
we drove to a bird-sanctuary which was close to his place and the owner was a good friend of alex. he gave me a tour through the sanctuary and then he brought a male kiwi-bird. he is 13 years old and has only one leg. they got the kiwi bird 13 years ago and it’s the only one in the world which you can see by daylight.
i could even pet him! a female kiwi-bird has around 2,5 kilos and is twice as big as a male. crazy!
after it we bought some food and then alex cooked for me and a friend of mine, kevin, who came after his uni up to whangarei as well.
we played some frisbee with alex in the park. i am still not good in it, after all that practise i had so far. terrible 😀
the next morning we said goodbye to alex and made our way up to bay of islands.
we got so lucky with the weather!! the weather forecast said that it is going to rain but it was not raining at all. it was just really hot.
we drove to matapouri and climbed up a hill to get to the mermaid pools. we had a swim there which was pretty nice!
then we drove up to paihia and stopped for some ice-cream and a short walk around.. after it we went to keri keri which is only 20 minutes further. we found a pretty nice place, called charlies rock.
it’s an 5 metres high waterfall where you can jump off..
i am afraid of heights but i always wanted to do cliff jumping so i tried & it was actually pretty fun! i didn’t expected this. but i am still afraid of heights. maybe when i do it more often my fear gets less.
kevin brought his big air mattress to the waterfalls. we blew it up and chilled a bit on the water. it was really relaxing!
it started to raining and to get cold so we drove back into keri keri town to grab some dinner.. i had delicious kumara-fies.
then we went to our couchsurfing-host. he lives close to town. we could sleep in the garage on the air mattress. it was pretty hot in the garage and he showed us a video about the products that he is working for.. it’s some sort of a pyramid system. some different kind of healthy powder that you should drink twice a day and then you have every vitamine, minerals, and all that other stuff which your body needs. it only costs around 300 dollar 😀 he let us try one bottle of that stuff and i couldn’t sleep until 2 am. strange stuff..
he also told me that carbs are not good for the body. we need fat because our brain is to 80 % only fat. so if you eat butter and cream that is really good for you but if you eat potato, oats, rice it’s not good. i thought that is the worst bullshit i have ever heard in my life. 😀
the next morning we drove up to northland. we made a stop at the 90 miles beach. from there you can drive with a four wheel drive car up the beach all the way to cape reinga.
the weather was great when we arrived at the lighthouse in cape reinga and the nature there was just amazing. it’s the northern point of the northisland in new zealand and it’s the place where the tasman-sea meets the pacific ocean.
a beach which has a complicated name, something like tukapaka beach is close by. it’s such an amazing beach & pretty much in the middle of nowhere.
then we drove a bit further down on the westcoast to the huge sand-dunes. we rented a board for 15 dollar and walked up the sanddunes. then we slided down on the board which was pretty cool and much faster as we expected!
