alana and i arrived in the afternoon at our new wwwoofing-place in kakanui. it’s close to oamaru. the family there is really nice – the man is from kenia and the woman from new zealand. they have a cute 3 years old daughter named elsie. she is full of power and once she started talking she never stopped which was exhausting for us 😀
they life in a really quiet area with a huuuuge vegetable garden. i never saw such a big garden before. they have a few sheep, chicken, goats & two sweet cats, ..
they try to make everything self sufficient that they dont have to go to the supermarket anymore. everday they made homemade bread and they also made a lot of anti-alcoholic ginger beer which was sooo good.
we helped a bit with weeding the first day before we had a delicious dinner. they both used to work as a chef in a restaurant so we got amazing food all the time. i think i gained about 5 kilo during our stay.
our job for the week was to make a cool garden with a walkway in front of their entrance.. before it was only a big piece of weed and when we finished it turned out to be pretty nice. we both didn’t do any gardening before.. we never thought it’s going to be such an exhausting job!!
digging out all the weed took us about 5 hours.. digging the walkway another 2 hours; putting all the bricks around the walkway took 5 hours as well; filling the garden with the straw another 2 hours. it was so exhausting, to carry all the bricks and the 40 kg bags full of earth.. especially because we always had to go up and down a hill.
we always had a big musclepain after work.. we felt like we are 60 years old
one day after work we drove 20 minutes to the next town oamaru.. it’s almost like a big city there. we drove around and were looking for a tattoo studio. we asked a few people if they know a studio here and they told us that there is only one but it’s pretty bad.
then we drove a bit around in the “city” and we found a cool looking house called steampunk.. we stopped their and a men with a lot of tattoos came to us and gave us 2 dollar and said we should put it in the big train in front of the big building. we throw it in their and a fire came out of the train.
we asked the man where he got his tattoos from and he said he know a gpood artist in the next city, timaru. it’s a one hour drive away. he said he can call the tattoo artist because he is friends with him.. he told us we should go in the “museum” while he is calling his friend and we should have a look at the big organ their. normally the entry is 15 dollar but we got it for free obiously. we didnt found a big organ their but we found something really great..
– their was a door with the sign “the portal“. when we opened the door there was a room with mirrors and lights everywhere. suddenly the light went out and cool music came and their was a lightshow. we felt like in heaven. so nice!!
we repeated it 3 times more because it was such an amazing feeling.
when we got back to the man he told us that he will ring his friend again because he is busy and we should call him tomorrow. we wrote down his number and drove to a point where there should be penguins. we waited 1,5 hours – no penguins.. then we drove back to the family and had great indian food for dinner.
on the next day after work i called a tattoo studio in timaru to see if they have time to do a tattoo on monday. they told me that the next date which is available is in 1,5 month and that they are always closed on mondays.
then i called the man (rappo) to see if he knows more from the tattoo artist. he told me that his friend has time on monday evening to do our tattoos. soo coool. he told me the name of the tattoo studio and the name of the guy and it was exactly the same tattoo studio which i called 5 minutes before.. where they told me they are closed and fully booked. strange but good for us 😀
the next day after work we wanted to give it another try to see the penguins. we arrived at the beach around 9 pm but this time we went to another beach as last time. there were a lot of people at the same spot. around 9:30 pm a lot of small penguins came out of the water. they were so cute and it took them a while to climb up the hill.
on our last day with the family we planted a lot of flowers in their new garden. the family said they love our work. we were really happy about it but also happy that it was our last day of work their because our neck and back and everything was completely sore after this week.
the family made a really good chocolate cake for our last evening together and we played some card games with them.
on the next morning we said goodbye to them and made our way to timaru which was one hour away. we found a nice couchsurfing place in the city and we even had our own bedroom there.
we had our tattoo date at 6 pm. we drove to the tattoostudio. it was alanas first tattoo and we were both really excited. the man in the studio was really cool and nice. he had the longest dreads i have ever seen so far.
alana got a mandala-flower tattoo around her ellbow. i am pretty sure that the place is painful but she said it didn’t hurt so much. i got a feather on my ribs. it didn’t really hurt either. we both got the same findertattoo then. it hurted soo much !! i hope it stays there because the tattoo artist told us that if we don’t get lucky it can only last for 3 weeks.
i am pretty happy with my new tattoos
